review Hidden Folk Eleanor Arnason ↠ 4 Summary Hidden Folk Summary Ç 104 Secreted away in Iceland's meadows and mountain crags dwell the Hidden Folk magical beings from the age of the Vikings In this new collection Eleanor Arnason has crafted five original tales both fantastical and contemporary in which ordinary folk cross paths with elves and trolls heroes and magicians vengeful ghosts a were puffin and even the de. The Hidden Folk are the elvesfairies that inhabit Iceland They are called the Hidden Folk because when God came visiting Adam and Eve hid some of their children from him God being God he naturally knew about them anyway and pronounced them the Hidden Folk And ever since the Folk have inhabited the dark and forgotten places They are elves trolls whatever lives underground or in the wilderness to avoid contact with humanityEleanor Arnason is of Icelandic heritage and this work is a labor of love dedicated to her ancestry She herself lives currently in Minnesota which used to be a place of a large concentration of Scandanavian immigrants although not uite so much today There are five stories in this book I was a bit disappointed to see that I d read one of them before since this book has only been released in hardback and was not cheap and that story ended up being about one uarter of the book The first story is her take on a vignette from one of the Icelandic sagas Medieval Icelanders recorded their history in these sagas the settling of Iceland conflicts between landholders outlaw tales They are funny old things and they do a good job of getting across what the original settlers noticed and found important The second story the one I d previously read is also based on a saga Egil s Saga one I ve read parts of myself and takes a small bit from the end of Egil s life and then re imagines it with elves Both of the first stories are written in a style that recalls saga very terse with lots of information given in a short period of time not much about inner thoughts action oriented great fantastic deeds told in a very matter of fact way Next we get a bit of a crossover story It s loosely based on the life of Saemunder Sigfusson a learned Icelander who traveled to Paris to study This man really existed but I don t think that he went to a Satanic university to learn black magic and outwitted the Devil to come home again Maybe I m wrongThe last two stories are set in modern times but have fantastic elements The Puffin Hunter a man who collects eiderdown and puffins for meat for his living ends up killing an elf shape changed into a puffin who then haunts his living room and craps all over it nightly He s got to go on a little uest to end the haunting And the last story probably my favorite features a young woman writer who loves her cabin on the isolated eastern coast of Iceland However her peace is disturbed when a troll falls in love with her and becomes a rather unpleasant suitorAgain all of these stories are written in a spare no nonsense manner If a character has to ride a giant animated iron dog ride a Satanic seal across the ocean or try to oust a troll with spotlights they just do it with no fuss It feels very much like the style of a pragmatic people who did whatever they needed to do to survive no muss or fuss I suppose in a way the Icelandic people have themselves been hidden folk for a long time isolated on their island As tourists begin to pack the place we ll see how the inhabitants be they animal human or supernatural react to the immense changes that are taking place
