The story starts with ex slave Caridad arriving in Cadiz from Cuba Alone and not knowing a soul in a foreign country she is directed to Sevilla where she may get religious help But things in Sevilla don t turn out rhe way she hopes and Caridad ends up in the hands of a devious man of takes advantage of her and her position and turns her into a prostutite Caridad soon becomes ill and only then is set free Feverish and praying to her gods the orishas she wanders through town until she is found by gipsy Melchor Vega who takes her with him A few days later Caridad recovers and starts living with Melchor and other gipsies namely his daughter Ana and beautiful grandaughter Milagros Back in Cuba Caridad used to roll tobacco leaves to make cigarettes so she is seen as an expert in what tobacco is concerned Melchor traffics tobacco and Caridad starts joining him in his jorneys thus they start building a very strong relationship Caridad gets and entwined in the gipsies affairs and problems particularly when all the gipsies in the kingdom are ordered to be arrested in an attempt to get rid of them this is the time when the ex slave and Milagros who has manage to escape the arrest will become close And not even when they are separated when Milagros is married against her grandfather s and mother s will or when she is in jail will Caridad forget her beautiful gipsy friend The only problem for Caridad is how to deal with freedom after being a slave all her life And it is difficult at the beginning Very difficult But with the help of the gipsies Caridad is about to love freedom and life And know what is the meaning of LoveI liked the book It is a story full of adventure treason music dance love pain passion It tells of a time when women and not only the gipsies belonged to the men and could do very little about it If a man wanted to send his wife to jail just because they had an argument he could Men did whatever they wanted to their wives and got along without punishment It was a hard time for women and we re talking 18th century but also for gipsies always persecuted I had never read anything about them so it was nice to do so Overall it is an interesting and exciting story Sometimes became a little too descriptive with details that were rather uninteresting but it was mostly worth devouring As for the characters I can t say I have a favourite Melchor is interesting as he is brave and capable of dying for honor He is a great fighter and can see in Caridad than others because he knows exactly what she has suffered while being a slave in Cuba As for Caridad a liked her but she could be too passive most of times She has a very hard time adapting to freedom she can t even look people in the eye when they talk to her she hesitates to much So there were some times I just wanted to give her a big push forward and tell her Come on Do something Just don t stand there Milagros is the beautiful young girl who makes mistake after mistake sometimes I wanted to slap her for being so stupid but there was a part of the book were she is so misused by her husband that I couldn t help feel very sorry for her and wish her beast of a husband to be caughtAlthough being an interesting worth reading story with an exciting plot I don t think is better than La Catedral del Mar which is still my favourite book by Mr Falcones L'Image de la cité (Hors Collection) mujeres ue no agacharon la cabeza y ue alzaron la voz para enfrentarse al orden establecido.
