Le roman de Tristan et Iseut

Summary ✓ Le roman de Tristan et Iseut ↠ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF Ance of Lancelot and Guinevere and has had a substantial impact on Western art and the idea of romantic love and literature Tristan and Iseult is a Medieval story of two star crossed lovers The King Tristan of Lyonesse nephew of Mark King of Cornwall at Tintagel and contemporary of King Arthur slays an Irish champion and thus wins a wife for King Mark The wife is Iseult the Fair princess from Ireland Tristan is sent to Ireland to claim Iseult and bring her back to Tintagel Iseult s maid concocts a love philtre that would bind Iseult and Mark to eternal love when drunk from the same cup On the trip back to Cornwall Tristan and Iseult inadvertently drink the philtre instead uniting them in an undying love The story thereafter revolves around the difficulty of loving while married to someone else as Mark and Iseult become husband and wife and court values meant that they could never consummate their love while Iseult was married And what would happen if Tristan also marriedBedier pieced the story together from different versions of the story including several independent short stories that were not part of a larger text Scholars seem to divide story sources into two different traditions the courtly tradition and a common tradition which is less courtly and perhaps older and was favored by Bedier Written versions popped up in different locations in the late 12th century in England Ireland and Continental Europe but there are versions of the story as far away as Persia almost at the same time As an anthropologist I will bet the story is older much older perhaps as old as the Bronze Age which in Europe is coincident with the spread of Indo European languages and their diversification And I would not be surprised to hear the story is even older than that What also seems certain is that the story struck a real chord with Medieval European cultures at about the same time the middle 1100 sThe story is basic a love triangle which collides with the basic tenets of feudalism and chivalry courtly love and loyalty to loved one and the liege relationship Results of the relationship probably depend on cultural expectations In the case of Bedier s version of Tristan and Iseult it resulted in not consummating their love to honor marriage vows and Tristan s feudal obligations to King Mark While Bedier s compilation is thought to favor the common origin his reconstruction seems from my peasant s perspective to be very courtlyI first ran into the story as an early teenager reading The Enchanted Cup a novelization of the story by Dorothy James Roberts Now as an adult it was high time to read something closer to the originals

Summary ✓ Le roman de Tristan et Iseut ↠ eBook, ePUB or Kindle PDF The legend of Tristan and Iseult is an influential romance and tragedy The tragic story is of the adulterous love between t A classic myth but maybe not the best versionTristan and Iseult is a big deal it s said to be a major influence for the romance between Lancelot and Guinevere Romeo and Juliet and pretty much the majority romantic love stories after the 12th century This myth was passed down verbally and has been committed to text by several different authors B dier argues that his version is adapted from the original poem which may or may not be historically accurate The style is conversational as if a bard is telling it aloud which is probably an attempt to retell the story as closely as possible to the Cornish poem B dier argued was the original No matter the accuracy the story as he writes it is interesting and tragic It would have been interesting and tragic if it didn t start by telling you what is going to happen but for some reason classics don t believe in the importance of the element of surpriseOne thing that this book got me thinking about was persuasion of the reader through perspective As long as a book clearly sides with a character as a good guy the reader generally accepts that the character is someone they should root for But these people were awful If we set aside the forbidden love affair moral conundrum there s still the fact that Tristan and Iseult go around killing or almost killing several people just to keep their boot knocking secret Nobel and fair hearted Not so much But I bet most people don t even notice TI are a holes because the narrator keeps talking about how awesome and doomed they are

Le roman de Tristan et Iseut (E–pub/E–book) á Joseph Bédier Okay so I did NOT love it but it was good I LOVE the 2006 film Tristan Isolde for reasons mostly this and this but also because it has one of the most poignantly beautiful forgiveness scenes I have ever seen Rufus Sewell as King Mark delivers an unforgettable performance Which is saying something because I am a HUGE James Franco fan he is the reason I watched the movie and Rufus Sewell stole that movie from him hands sni
