because a rather pretentious woman is asking for some material that the young girl is unable to identify never mind find anywhere in the buildingThis is how he meets Elizabeth Gruffydd Williams an attractive woman that belongs to the higher class who is interested in finding a history of welsh costume because she explains that she is involved in the design and the making of costumes for a play that would open soonThis visitor of the library is very interested in the hero she drives to his house to get him and his wife who has been her colleague in school out to her party when it is established that the couple have no baby sitter to leave their kids with the host takes a guest and makes him sit with the childrenJohn Aneuris is evidently attracted to the sensuous Elizabeth Gruffydd but in his defense it must be said that he has a troubled conscience and up to a pint he tries to resist the temptation even when it becomes clear that the married woman is determined to get him in her bedwell if not on the bed intimate in any caseThe protagonist that is married to a rich influential member of the Town Council and the Libraries Committee Vernon is patronizing a poet Gareth Probert who has written a terrible Welsh play called The Martyr uses the opening to invite the man she likes John Aneuris to the first performance of the playMany comical incidents take place in this phenomenal work from the car that starts sliding towards a precipice when the hero meets the rich friends of the beautiful Mrs Gruffydd to the hilarious moments that follow the intimate moments the kiss that the protagonists exchange in the house of rich VernonHis wife says that he is not expected home but while she embraces the hero the car of her husband arrives in the drive way she arranges herself a little throws cigarettes on the floor for her partner to pick up and cover for the breathlessness that is affecting him after they had just been so close to each other and excitedJohn Aneuris thinks he can escape to the door while the husband is in the large house in a different area but he stumbles near the door sliding into a storage room which he leaves only to be trapped again because Gareth Probert and other guests have arrived hence the lover has to hide againAs he tries various corners of the house the hiding protagonist arrives in the bedroom of his partner where he decides to dress for amusement in the traditional Middle Ages dress of aWelsh woman and as he is finished the guests chase each other through the house reaching the bedroomThe cornered librarian is hiding behind curtains now but when this spot is dangerous he decides to jump from the first floor to the ground out of the room into the garden where he runs in the traditional costume of a Welsh woman which he would have to wear on the bus taking him home where he is called an impostor by another traveler a woman is angered by his acknowledgement that he does not speak Welsh hence the impostor appellativeThe man sitting in next to him on the bus is placing first his hand on the knee of the passenger he thinks is a woman and then chases him to the door of the house where he is helped by his neighbor from downstairsRelations with his wife deteriorate for she has seen the immoral lustful interest he displayed at the party where they had been invited together for the married forthcoming Elizabeth Gruffydd Williams who would insert the hero into her crowd making him something of a regular at their gatheringsThe main pretext used is the fact that there is an opening for the post of Sub Librarian which means substantially money which the hard pressed Lewis family could very well do with eventually getting a chance to move from the sordid lodgings they have to share with a rather difficult woman and her always barking dogJohn Aneuris feels sorry and somewhat guilty for his colleague Ieuan Jenkins seeing as he would get help from Vernon Gruffydd Williams to get the important position which would also mean a crucial medical help for Mrs Jenkins who seems to have lost her mind and the eventual income increase of her husband might help substantiallyFor the under signed it was amazing to see uite a few readers express disappointment no less after reading a book which one should rate no less that extraordinary stupefying as is the case with all the works that Kingsley Amis has written well so far we could vouch for the aforementioned four but there is no doubt that the others that will soon be read with exuisite pleasure and enthusiasm are just as phenomenalThis reader would confess that he might have liked a different ending one that would have kept Elizabeth Gruffydd and John Aneuris somehow together in some form of arrangement or other even if one must admit that that would have been inappropriate immoral and probably wrong on other levels tooIt was just a thoughtThat Uncertain Feeling is miraculous and a dazzling amusing extraordinary readKingsley Amis is a God

Read & Download ¹ That Uncertain Feeling 105 EstBut Lewis is both and less than he appears Beneath this family man facade lurks a poet wit and visionaryalso a budding lecher for we soon find Lewis peering down the front of There is something Walter Mitty ish about this novel a small town librarian being enthusiastically pursued and seduced by a glamorous older woman I find early Amis with much emphasis on slapstick and embarrassing situations less interesting than his middle period Girl 20 the Anti Death League Jake s Thing Ending Up etc and couldn t finish this book I daresay it was very entertaining in its day but the comments on the way people lived in small town Wales in 1955 get rather tiresome especially given the detail that the author goes into
