A Short History of Anarchism (Anarchism & Psychoanalysis) Free read ☆ 2 Max Nettlau was the most proficient and still is the most important chronicler of anarchism This one volume at 400 pages introduction to the history of anarchist ideas and early movements summarizing the author's monumental 9 v Need A Reference Book for Anarchist History This Is It I feel it s important that anyone looking to pick this up should perhaps give this review a skim first before doing so I should also say that I cannot proceed with this review unless I address a very important fact in my reading of this text That fact being I never finished it In fact I closed it this evening at chapter 15 and handed it to a friend for potential use in a university dissertation they re writing for their final year Interestingly the serious intentions the new owner of this book has in mind for this text plays a pretty big role in this reviews trajectory On a side note I really really dislike leaving books unfinished especially when marking them on Goodreads as read However I find this to be an exception to my self imposed rule due to the fact that as soon as I begin to stop taking in information from a book of history at least for long reading periods I feel it becomes slightly pointless continuing on with it otherwise why bother reading history in the first place I picked this particular gem up in an Anarchist book store I visited in London on a whim As such it was never a book I had in the pipeline to read prior to this visit However staying true to my obsessive nature in pursuing book shelf completion I started to read Max Nettlaus endeavour back in May 2017 The short review embedded here is that the book in uestion chronicles in exceptional detail Anarchist going ons and shenanigans around the world from the late 18th century up until the 1930 s A simple premise but one that took a frustrating turn in my experience trying to digest the content The problem I found in this work is purely subjective as despite the subject being exactly up my alley I love history books with titles like this one the way it was presented didn t uite live up to the same expectation This is an extremely formal account of this strand of history The main structure of each chapter is set up to introduce the reader to the names places locations and background of each region England Spain Italy all receive their own chapter at a certain point when Anarchist movements began to develop into something worth a Historians chronicling Nettlau does find a few moments per chapter to talk about a particularly prominent individual and their particular contribution on the Anarchist Syndicalist Libertarian tradition but the main body of text regularly canters off into entire paragraphs dedicated to listing important publications related to specific years or regions of a country As a result this style will be a history students wet dream What is given to us readers by Max Nettlaus hard endeavour is an incredibly well organised compendium of other intellectuals and revolutionaries to potentially research or look up Do you consider yourself a Spanish Anarchist Are you a historian with a particular interest in the revolutionary periods between the 18th and 19th centuries in your country and all their respective strands Then this is without a doubt for you The plethora of information here makes this of a book for referencing the reader toward further reading with just enough narrative spun into its body to make it readable as something other than the above mentioned However if you re a casual reader looking for something like Howard Zinns A People s History of The United States or any books in the A Very Short Introduction series check those out then I wouldn t recommend starting here The formality of Nettlaus style isn t difficult to read in fact his passion and energy for the subject is definitely infectious at times but certainly became monotonous after a while at least as it began to dawn on me exactly what it was that I was reading Hence my abrupt end about 34 of the way through its pages I found that despite wanting to read about for example the African Anarchist tradition I wasn t going to be able to fully appreciate said history through this book The presentation was simply to academic in style and formatHowever I simply cannot give this less than four stars for whatever it s worth as chronicling the Anarchist tradition is an endeavour that needs to be cherished and kept alive People died for their beliefs for a world free of oppression and hierarchy and it s nothing less that heroic to see a Historian focus on preserving an area of revolutionary history that I m sure MANY authoritarian loving junkies would love to see eradicated from collective human memory In fact I could almost visualise Nettlau putting these volumes together at a fervent pace just so we and future generations could have a book like this in the first placeTreat this with respect The bookshop is Freedom Press and is located in Whitechapel London It s small but packed full of amazing books The use of the plural version of this word is because this book is in fact a condensed version of a MUCH longer text written by Nettlau
